ABOUT THE JACOBITES
High school teacher turned comedian takes his successful
“educomedy” Edinburgh Fringe show on tour |
|
Former high school physics teacher Bruce Fummey will be
performing his one man comedy show “About the Jacobites”
at venues across Scotland this spring. In ninety minutes
of fun filled laughter, Bruce will take you on a
historical romp from Henry VIII, through Mary Queen of
Scots, the Union of the Crowns, William of Orange, the
Union of Parliament, Bonnie Prince Charlie, Culloden,
finishing up at the Highland Clearances. |
|
Bruce says, “Comedy should first and foremost make you
laugh. But if it can educate at the same time, then
you’re onto a winner! Most of us know the basics of
Scottish history and that Bonnie Prince Charlie tried to
take back the British throne in 174546.” |
|
“We know that he was thrashed in battle at Culloden in
1746. However, he came very close to victory. King
George III would have had his bags packed and his ticket
back to Germany all arranged when Charlie reached Derby,
just 125 miles from the capital. But why did they turn
back? And what if they had succeeded? Queen Elizabeth II
would probably be a German countess and the American
Revolution might never have happened. Imagine the USA as
part of the Commonwealth.” |
|
Bruce is nothing like your typical tweed jacket,
bespectacled professor. His humour and language are
often as colourful as the period in history discussed in
the show. “About the Jacobites” is definitely not
for schoolchildren! |
|
“About the Jacobites” is Bruce’s second successful
Edinburgh Fringe educomedy show; in 2006 he won rave
reviews for “About Tam O’Shanter”. Bruce says, “If after
seeing the show you burst into laughter every time you
think of the Bonnie Prince Charlie, then educomedy has
done its job.” |

Great Expectations
by Charles Dickens
Adapted by Jo Clifford
Directed by Ben Twist
Sound Design by David Fennessy
Designed by Monika Nesbit
Charles Dickens’ classic story of love and mystery makes terrific
theatre. Pip longs to be a gentleman, but he is haunted by the
memory of the mysterious Magwitch. Caught in the web of the
reclusive Miss Havisham’s desire for revenge against all men, Pip’s
love for the beautiful Estelle seems to be just another dream.
Jo Clifford’s beautiful adaptation uses Dickens’ own words to create
a classic work of modern British theatre. The production will
feature a live soundscape from one of Scotland’s finest young
composers, Dave Fennessy, an outstanding cast and all the
theatricality audiences have come to expect from the company that
brought you Sunset Song and Further Than the Furthest Thing.
